SUNSET HORSEBACK RIDE OVER WAI'ANAE MOUNTAINS

Horseback

Saddle up for a golden-hour horseback ride along Oahu’s southern Wai‘anae slopes, with sweeping coastal views and photo stops that feel pulled from a dream.

$158

This 60–90 minute trail ride winds through private, rugged terrain on the southern face of the Wai‘anae Mountains, offering panoramic views of Oahu’s western and southern coasts—especially stunning during the golden-hour glow before sunset. Led by experienced guides and riding real working polo ponies, the experience is beginner-friendly but still offers enough magic to impress seasoned riders. Group sizes are small (max 8), and there’s a built-in stop for scenic photos. You’ll dismount with dirt on your boots, wind in your hair, and probably a new favorite photo on your phone. It’s not a showy tourist ride—just an honest, beautiful way to meet this part of the island.

FOLIO TRAVELOGUE

Riding into the Light

We pulled off the highway and followed a winding road into the hills—red dirt, scrubby trees, and the kind of golden light that photographers chase. At the top, the trailhead felt more like a tucked-away ranch than a tourist setup. No crowds, no plastic leis. Just a corral of polo ponies and a few people quietly brushing them down. One of the guides handed us helmets and saddle bags. “We ride at sunset,” he said, and that was that.

Once we were mounted up, we headed straight into open terrain. The horses knew the way—slow, deliberate steps over lava rock and dried grasses. As we climbed higher, the ocean opened up below. You could see clear to the curve of the island. No houses. No highways. Just slope, sky, and salt air. Our guide called out place names in Hawaiian, pointed to old lava flows, and gave each horse a quick intro like they were old friends.

“There’s something about seeing the island from up high, with a horse under you and no noise but wind, that makes you feel grounded in a totally new way.”

About halfway through, we stopped near a ridgeline where the sun was starting to dip. The light turned syrupy, the kind that catches in your hair and makes shadows stretch long. We took pictures—of course we did—but mostly we just stood there quiet for a while. There’s something about seeing the island from up high, with a horse under you and no noise but wind, that makes you feel grounded in a totally new way.

On the ride back, the horses picked up their pace like they knew it was dinner time. When we returned, the guide handed out apple slices for the horses and showed us how to feed them properly—palm flat, fingers back. My hands were still dusty. My jeans smelled like leather and sun. It wasn’t flashy or fast. It was just... real. The kind of moment that settles into you and stays.
