FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Brew School in Kona: A Hands-On Coffee Workshop
You don’t just drive to Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm—you climb toward it, winding up the slopes of Mauna Loa through lush green hills with the Kona coast glittering behind you. The air gets cooler, the landscape opens up, and suddenly you’re standing on a working coffee estate with rows of trees, the scent of roasted beans in the breeze, and a panoramic view that makes you pause before even thinking about caffeine.
The workshop starts slow and friendly. You’re welcomed into a small outdoor tasting space that feels more like someone’s lanai than a classroom. Before you even touch a filter or press, you’re sipping from a lineup of single-origin Kona coffees, each one freshly brewed and completely different from the last. A brew master walks you through what you’re tasting—not just strong or weak, but body, acidity, balance. You start hearing words like “chocolatey” or “citrus” and realizing: yeah, that’s actually there.
One hour here will ruin mediocre coffee for you—in the best possible way.
Then the hands-on part begins. You grind beans, measure water, time your pour. You master the French press: when to stir, when to steep, how not to overdo it. You move on to pour-over, where everything from the size of your spiral pour to the seconds on your timer affects the final taste. It’s nerdy in the best way—but also completely unpretentious. No one here is judging your technique; they’re just excited to show you how a few small changes can transform your morning ritual.
Throughout the session, the setting stays front and center. The workshop is surrounded by coffee trees, butterflies, birdsong, and the smell of sun-warmed earth. Between brews, you take in the view—ocean to one side, mountains to the other. It’s grounding, and a little magical. You leave with a fresh appreciation for what goes into each cup, a pocket-sized brewing journal for your next experiments, and the kind of mellow buzz that has nothing to do with caffeine.
