FOLIO TRAVELOGUE

Zip, Trek & Rappel: Big Island's Premier Zipline Experience

There’s a moment—usually right before the first zip—when your brain wonders why you’re about to step off a platform 80 feet in the air. Then you go. Wind in your face, forest flying by, coastline somewhere in the distance, and just like that: you’re in it. The Kohala Zipline canopy tour runs through a private forest reserve just outside the town of Hawi in North Kohala. And it’s not just a series of ziplines—it’s a full aerial trekking course, designed to keep you off the ground the entire time.

By the last line, I forgot I was nervous. I wanted to go again.

You move from tree to tree with no stair climbs between lines, walking across six swinging sky bridges and pausing at lookout platforms that hover high above the forest floor. Some of the lines are fast—up to 45 mph—but the setup is smooth, and the gear is top-tier. The guides are certified, fun without being cheesy, and genuinely know their stuff. They’ll point out native trees, explain the history of ancient agricultural systems below, and keep the energy just right from start to finish. And yes, you finish the course with a short, controlled rappel off the final platform (don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds).

The whole thing takes about three hours, and it’s perfect for families with older kids, first-time zipliners, or anyone looking to trade beach time for a little adrenaline—without needing to hike uphill or rappel into a jungle cave. It's adventure at canopy level, with a rare mix of views, comfort, and fun.
