FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Exotic Fruit Tasting in Holualoa
You pull off Mamalahoa Highway and follow a rustic driveway up the hillside—a sudden burst of green in a patchwork of coffee and macadamia orchards. At the farm entrance, a friendly guide greets you, and you set out on a shady trail lined with tropical trees. The walk is short but immersive: pineapples peek from beneath broad leaves, lychee and rambutan cluster in bright reds, while coconut palms sway overhead.
One hour, a dozen fruits, and a whole new view of Hawai‘i’s flavors.
At tasting stations, you sample four or more fruits—fresh lychee bursting with floral sweetness, creamy avocado, tangy passion fruit, and a bite of mangosteen dubbed the “queen of fruits.” Each taste comes with context: how the fruit came to Hawai‘i, its cultural role, even how to store the seeds afterward. The guide explains how the region’s volcanic soil and misty microclimate help certain fruits thrive—and why others are limited to only the most fertile groves.
By the end, you’ve filled your palate—and a take-home container if you don’t finish. You leave smelling of sun-warmed citrus, energized by unexpected flavors, and feeling like you’ve traveled the islands through taste. It's quick, it's colorful, and it’s a delicious snapshot of Hawai‘i you won't find at a grocery store.
