FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Halfway to Hāna, Fully Worth It
We weren’t sure how much of the Road to Hāna the kids could handle—just the name sounds epic, like a saga of motion sickness and sibling squabbles. But Halfway to Hāna turned out to be just right. Just enough winding road to feel like an adventure, just enough waterfalls to keep eyes glued to the windows, and just enough stops to stretch legs and splash in the kind of freshwater pools you only see in nature documentaries.
Our guide had a way of weaving stories that caught even our eight-year-old’s attention—explaining how taro is still farmed the old way, and why the cliffs we passed were once key landmarks for ancient voyagers. We snacked on banana bread still warm from a roadside oven, hiked a gentle trail through whispering bamboo, and found a cove where the kids swore they saw a turtle (and maybe they did).
“Waterfalls, banana bread, and no one asked for an iPad. Win.”
Somewhere around the Ke‘anae Peninsula, with the ocean crashing below and the jungle pressing in around us, time stopped feeling linear. The road curved, and we just followed—no destination, just discovery. On the way back, the car was quieter, the kids leaned against the windows, and we all felt something settle in. Not the full Road to Hāna, no badge of endurance—but a memory, already golden.
