FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Stand Up, Chill Out
There’s something about Kalapaki Bay that immediately puts you at ease. Maybe it’s the curve of the shoreline that shields the bay from stronger currents. Maybe it’s the light wind brushing over the surface, just enough to keep things interesting. Either way, it’s exactly where you want to be for your first SUP lesson.
The beach crew was relaxed but dialed in—barefoot instructors who’ve probably been paddling these waters since middle school. They ran us through a few basics on land: how to hold the paddle, where to stand, what to expect when you inevitably fall in. Then we launched.
"Before long, I wasn’t just standing—I was moving."
Out on the water, the learning curve wasn’t steep. Wobbly at first, sure—but the calm made it manageable. One of the instructors paddled beside me, offering subtle tips without micromanaging. Before long, I wasn’t just standing—I was moving. I carved a little, turned toward the headland, and looked out over the open ocean. Felt something click.
We ended with a few tries on the baby waves. Not quite surfing, but close enough to feel the rush. I didn’t catch anything clean, but I didn’t wipe out either. Call it a win.
