FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Fewer People, More Waves
We didn’t want the chaos of a big group. My daughter was nervous, and I was only pretending not to be. So we booked the semi-private lesson—just the two of us and an instructor—and drove down to the beach without the pressure of strangers watching us wipe out.
Before even touching the water, our instructor walked us through the basics: how to paddle, how to stand, where to look, how to fall. It was calm and no-nonsense, the kind of talk that comes from someone who’s taught hundreds of first rides and still loves it.
“Just us, our boards, and enough waves to actually learn—without anyone else in the way.”
Out in the water, it was just us and a clean little break. No rush. No whistle blowing. The waves came in soft and predictable, and with the instructor giving light pushes and calm pointers, it wasn’t long before my daughter stood up and rode her first wave all the way in. I followed—not exactly stylish, but standing, smiling, riding.
It felt like the right way to learn: not hyped up, not crowded, just the rhythm of the ocean and someone who knew when to speak and when to let us figure it out. Surfing’s not something you master in an hour, but this gave us something better: a confident start, and a story we’d talk about all trip.
