FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Braking for Views in Waimea Canyon
Somewhere near the summit of Waimea Canyon, I stopped pedaling—because that’s the whole point. You don’t come on this ride to grind up hills. You come to coast. From the very first curve, the road feels like it was made to be glided. Our small group got shuttled up, fitted with bikes, and briefed by a guide who clearly knew every twist in the road and every story the canyon could tell.
The landscape does most of the talking. On the left, sheer cliffs layered in reds, greens, and volcanic browns—like a cross-section of time itself. On the right, flashes of waterfall mist and gorges that disappear into the jungle below. Every few bends, we stopped to take it in. Not just for the photos (though we took plenty), but because you can’t really ride past a view like that without looking. The guide pointed out distant ridgelines of the Nāpali Coast and gave a quick hit of Hawaiian history that made the place feel even bigger.
"You don’t come on this ride to grind up hills. You come to coast."
The downhill was smooth, steady, never too fast—just enough to feel the wind pick up and let you focus on the sights rather than the effort. The air got warmer as we dropped in altitude. We peeled off jackets, loosened up, and let it ride. By the time we reached the flats near the coast, the sun was low and gold, and I realized I’d barely looked at my phone in hours.
Of all the ways to see Waimea Canyon, this might be the most unexpected: not from the air, not from a sweaty hike—but from a quiet, gliding ride that puts you right in the landscape, moving just slow enough to feel it.
