FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Wave by Wave
Bodyboarding might be the most joyful way to meet the ocean for the first time. It doesn’t take long—one wave is enough. The team at Ohana Surf Project knows that exact moment when hesitation turns into joy, and their instructors are patient pros at helping you get there, whether you're five or seventy-five.
From the moment you check in at their shop in the Waikiki Marriott, everything feels relaxed and easy. You're fitted with fins and a board, given a warm welcome and a little ocean wisdom, and then it’s off to the beach. The waves here are gentle and consistent, and the instructors choose the best conditions for learning—just enough swell to get moving, not too much to overwhelm.
"It doesn’t take long—one wave is enough."
Once you're in the water, the experience becomes something elemental: wave, paddle, ride, repeat. Lying on the board, you feel every ripple. There’s no pressure to perform, only encouragement to enjoy. Some riders quickly find their groove; others take a few tries. Either way, it’s a low-stakes, high-reward kind of joy. The instructors are close by, always ready with a push, a pointer, or a laugh.
By the end, everyone’s smiling, sandy, and a little saltier in spirit. You return to the shop to watch your ride clips, maybe pick up a souvenir shirt, and chat about which board you liked best. It’s more than just a lesson—it’s an initiation into a simple pleasure you didn’t know you needed.
