4.9★ from 3,300+ reviews on TripAdvisor

Travelers rave that this full-day adventure is “the highlight of our Maui trip,” praising how each stop — waterfalls, bamboo forests, swimming holes — feels thoughtfully paced and full of surprises. Reviewers love the guides for their “encyclopedic knowledge of flora and Hawaiian culture” and for keeping the small group atmosphere friendly and safe, even on muddy or misty sections of the trail. Many say they’d never have found these secluded spots on their own — and wouldn’t want to drive the Hana Highway solo anyway.

“Our guide was amazing — so many stories, plants I’d never noticed, and just the right amount of adventure.”

  • "We had a great time! I had no idea there were so many waterfalls on Maui. It was a perfect mix of hiking and enjoying the falls and dipping into streams."

Their team of expert naturalists transforms the famous Road to Hana into something far richer than a scenic drive — layering each stop with local history, native ecology, and stories that make this wild corner of Maui unforgettable.

  • "Awesome experience- waterfall was cool but our guide (Dave) was amazing- he knew all about the island history, plants/fruits, picked a ton of stuff that we ate on the hike. It was really fun."

FOLIO TRAVELOGUE

From Kahului to Waterfall Wilderness: My Journey Through Hāna’s Waterfall Trails

We met before sunrise at Kahului’s Park & Ride, our nine-person group already buzzing with anticipation. As the van eased onto the serpentine Road to Hāna, the landscape transformed—from pineapple fields to towering cliffs and dense rainforest. Our first stop: a roadside waterfall dramatic enough to snap a collective gasp before we even began hiking.

Our trail wove through bamboo groves whispering overhead, rain filtering through the canopy and dappling our path. We paused at photos ops hidden from most tourists, and at a 45-foot cascade where bold hikers dove in while others simply marveled at its emerald plunge pools.

“Walking beneath bamboo and beside waterfalls on the Road to Hāna felt like step by step into Maui’s untamed soul.”

The crown moment came at Ohe‘o Gulch. The 400-foot waterfall roared into an impossibly green valley. We ate lunch beside its base, the air scented sweet with water mist and wild ginger. A few braved a chilly swim; the rest drifted in silence, awed and still.

Returning, we retraced the winding coast, stopping for final views of lava cliffs meeting the Pacific. By the time we returned to Kahului, the day’s layering of sun, mist, and trail had settled deep into our bones—it didn’t feel like a tour. It felt like a passage through a living portrait of Maui.
