FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
Farm-to-Fork in Wailuku: A Regenerative Journey Through Lā Kāhea Community Farm
We meet by the double-yellow gate just off HI‑30, Wailuku, as tropical birds dart overhead and the farm greets us with the scent of damp earth and growth. Our guide, Winsome, welcomes our group of about 12 and promises a journey “from earth to taste.”
We begin with sugar cane pressed fresh and chilled—sweet and surprising. Then we walk through fields where banana bunches hang heavy, passionfruit vines curl, and taro leaves fan out in emerald clusters. At each stop we sample: papaya sliced at the stem, hibiscus petals, creamy ice-cream bananas.
“Tasting sugar cane pressed at our feet—this is when Maui’s regenerative story became real.”
A highlight: feeding goats that roam freely, nibbling tender shoots from our hands. We dig into compost and learn how every banana peel and coffee husk becomes soil. The land feels alive—verdant, purposeful, regenerative.
Looking out toward the West Maui Mountains, Winsome tells us about Maui’s sugar and pineapple past—and why Lā Kāhea’s future is rooted in balance. We can feel it: the sun warming our backs, the breeze rustling leaves, the shared sense that food is more than flavor—it’s connection.
By the end, hands sticky with juice and pockets full of farm-bought produce, the group lingers. No rush. Just gratitude, harvest, and a fresh outlook on how land—and community—nourish each other.
