Offered in partnership with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s Mālama Hawai‘i program, this planting experience invites visitors to give back while connecting deeply with the land. Set on 60 oceanfront acres in Waialua, North Shore Stables is restoring its coastline with native plants that naturally rebuild sand dunes, prevent erosion, and protect against sea level rise. You’ll walk the land, learn about native ecosystems and traditional ecological knowledge, and plant a species chosen to thrive in this environment. Gloves and water are provided—just bring a water bottle and an open mind. It’s a short but meaningful way to leave a lasting footprint—of the good kind.

FOLIO TRAVELOGUE

Giving Back to the Sand and Sea

This wasn't about doing something flashy. No Instagrammable “before and after,” no certificate or souvenir. Just a quiet hour on the North Shore, hands in the dirt, learning about how dunes form and why certain plants—long-legged, salt-loving, deeply rooted—are nature’s best defense against the rising ocean.

We walked through part of the 60-acre coastline under restoration, past plots already greening over, and stopped at a patch where we’d help out. Our guide spoke about how invasive grasses had taken over in past decades, how the right native species don’t just survive here—they hold the shoreline together. These weren’t generic gardening facts. They were stories of place, passed with care.

“We didn’t just learn about this place—we did something for it.”

Planting was simple: gloves on, dig a little, place the plant, pat the soil. But there was something grounding in it—literally. The air was warm, the ocean a constant hush just beyond the dunes, and everyone worked without much talking. Not because we had to be quiet. Just because the moment asked for it.

When we left, our hands were a little dusty and our minds a little clearer. We didn’t just learn about this place—we did something for it. It was small. But it felt right.
