FOLIO TRAVELOGUE
The Ocean Has a Rhythm
We pushed off from Haleiwa Beach just after breakfast, the air warm but soft with trade winds, and the water already catching light. The canoe rocked gently as we settled into place—three of us up front, a pair of local watermen behind us, steering and calling rhythm. Within minutes, we were paddling in sync, muscles warming, gliding past the curve of the bay and out toward the open.
There’s something humbling about the outrigger. It’s not just a vessel—it’s a piece of living history. Our guides explained the origins between strokes, how ancient Polynesians used these canoes to cross entire oceans. Out here, moving by our own power, I could feel some faint echo of that time: the focus, the coordination, the deep respect for the sea.
"More rhythm than effort—like the ocean was carrying us home."
We paused by a calm reef and jumped in with masks. The water was shallow, warm, and full of motion—schools of silverfish darting, coral swaying, everything brighter than expected. One of the guides dove deep and surfaced with a sea cucumber like it was the most ordinary thing in the world. We floated. We laughed. We drifted back to the canoe slowly, not ready to leave.
The paddle back was quieter—more relaxed, more rhythm than effort. I leaned back and looked toward the mountains, green and sharp against the sky. A few surfers waited on the edge of the break. We weren’t far from shore, but it felt like we’d gone someplace else entirely. Not far, but deep.
